Isaiah 48 17-18 tells us:
I am the Lord your God,
Who teaches you
what is best for you,
Who directs you
in the ways you should go.
If only you had paid attention to my commands,
Your peace would
have been like a river,
Your
righteousness like the waves of the sea.
Although I am sure the context which with this was written
refers to much larger concepts than I am applying them today, the point still
comes across: it is God who teaches us what is best and God who directs us
where we should go. If we pay attention to his direction, we then can have
peace and righteousness.
I often have little “spiritual nudges”. During these times
(usually during the early morning), I know that God would like me to spend time
with Him. I have lots of proof that when I listen to these nudges, not only do
I feel closer to God, but my days are much more positive, and productive. But
what I do most often, is say “not today,” roll over, and go back to sleep. My
whole day is then thrown off, my attitude and heart are not where they need to
be, and I usually only gain another twenty minutes of shut eye (most of which is
spent thinking of how I should be awake)! Reading the above verses today makes
me think that “peace like a river” may be mine on a more frequent basis if only
I take the time to do what God has commanded.
God commands us to, “Commit yourselves wholeheartedly to
these words of mine.” (Deuteronomy 11:18). In order to know what is best for
us, and where God has planned for us to go, we must study and learn his words
from the bible. Without knowing those words, we cannot know God as well as He would like us to.
Heavenly Father, please put the
desire on my heart to learn more about You. To learn your words and commands
and have those arm me in the morning so that my whole day begins in the right
place. It is through knowing your words that I will know what is best for me
(according to You and not the world) as well as discover the ways You want me
to go. Help me remember that in listening to your command, peace will flow; not
with everything in my life, but in my relationship with You. Please help me
choose You every day, I cannot do it on my own.
