Scripture of the Day:
“…And as Elijah stood there, the Lord passed by, and a
mighty windstorm hit the mountain. It was such a terrible blast that the rocks
were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an
earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake
there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there
was the sound of a gentle whisper.”
1 Kings 19:11b-12
God, I love how you demonstrate your power through these
words! You could come as a windstorm; as an earthquake, or as fire…but you sometimes
choose to show up as a gentle whisper.
There are some days – I would venture to even go so far as
to say there are some weeks, months, or even years – where we don’t feel we
hear God. His voice seems gone. But perhaps the fact of the matter is we just
aren’t listening! It’s easy to let the world in. To let our culture, our
friends, and even our families over take our lives. We cannot hear the whisper
through the storm of life going on around us.
To go a step in a “literal” direction, God called to Elijah
in a gentle whisper. This was not an aggravated “yell-whisper” as we sometimes
use to get people’s attention. This was a calm whisper that I think Elijah
really had to listen for. Sometimes in order to hear God, we need to be still.
We should not always expect God to come into our lives with trumpets and fan
fare, although there are times when God seems to shout our names. Those are the
times when the people we trust and the circumstances in our lives seem to all
line up and we know God is fully present. Other times we know we are really in trouble and God is shouting out to get our attention! And other times he calls out to us in
a gentle whisper and we have to be quiet and paying attention or you will miss
him.
My friend, I pray we are always listening!
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father God, thank you for demonstrating to us that
although you are omnipotent, you don’t always come into our lives in an
earth-shaking way. Sometimes you gently whisper our names. Please help us drown
out the wind and the earthquakes and the fire in our lives so that we can hear
your voice. Help the Holy Spirit in us know when you call.
