Scripture of the Day: Matthew 6:9-13
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
Sometimes I lay awake at night, unable to sleep and I usually feel like I should be praying about something. I run through the people I know who are on my list, run through my own petitions and then I continue to lay there, feeling like I am missing something. Last night at bible study, we read the Lord's Prayer (see above), and although our focus was on forgiveness, what has stuck out to me is the guidelines at the beginning, "This, then, is how you should pray."
Sometimes when you don't know what to pray, you need to pray how Jesus taught us to pray! Prior to this instruction, Jesus says in verse 8, "your Father knows what you need before you ask him." Because of this, sometimes it is not the words of your prayer that matter so much - it is the act of praying itself that God is looking for.
If you were raised in a denomination, as I was, you may have memorized this prayer as a child. Let's bring it back into our faith life by using it! I do encourage you to not simply recite the words - think about them and mean them. Let them sit on your heart. This is a powerful prayer!
Closing Prayer:
Thank you Father, for teaching us how to pray. Please help me instill Your words in my prayer life more often. You taught them to us because you wanted them to be use!
Our father, who art in Heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, they will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
