Scripture of the Day: Luke 2: 7-14
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Song of the day: Jesus is Born Today (the Oak Ridge Boys)
Jesus was born today, born in a manger
Though he was young they say he was no stranger
He has set me free, You'll find you'll believe
I'm so glad to see it is his birthday
Jesus was born today, Oh, how we praise him
Shepherds and wise men say they will adore him
Mighty love has he just for you and for me
I'm so glad to see it is his birthday! (happy birthday)
The whole month of December we have tried to drill in my son's head that Christmas is Jesus' Birthday. Every time we say this, the little guy wants us to sing "Happy Birthday" to HIM. (sigh). It is hard to explain the significance of Jesus to a two year old :).
On Christmas Day, I am making two more attempts. I have the baby Jesus from our nativity wrapped as a present and will give that to Nathan as yet a way to explain how Jesus' life (and death) were a gift and I am making a birthday cake so we can sing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus. And not Nathan!
Reader, please remember that on Christmas Day, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. You can get technical and say that he wasn't REALLY born on December 25th, but I can then argue with you and say that doesn't matter! It is symbolic. Regardless of when it really happened, on Christmas Day we celebrate the birth of the baby who saved the world.
Christmas isn't about presents. Or family squabbles. Or about what you did or didn't get. Or about whether or not someone did, or did not like, what you got them. It isn't about making everyone happy. Christmas is all about that baby, who was also God.
And when God loves you and approves of what you are doing, the rest all slips away so that instead of focusing on all the THINGS, we can focus on the freedom and love that came from above. And that love was shown most blatantly through a child born in a manger. Celebrate that!
As the Oak Ridge Boys say - I am so glad to see that it is his Birthday! Happy Birthday Jesus!
