I have decided that for the month of December, I am going to focus on a different Christmas song for each post. I love Christmas music. Any, and all kinds - much to the consternation of my husband who only likes Bing Crosby!
Today's post is about the Little Drummer Boy (specifically the version by MercyMe - please listen if you have not!)
Scripture of the Day: Luke 2:8-12
8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
Does that make anyone else think of Linus in Charlie Brown? :) This is the verse I think of anytime I envision Jesus as a baby, and in the Little Drummer Boy, a baby he is! For years, the Little Drummer Boy has been one of my favorite songs. I confess it is mainly because I like the "pa-rum-pum-pum-pums!" However, last year I heard the MercyMe version for the first time and then the song took on a whole new significance. The song has the same words as all the other versions, BUT it ends on the line "Then He smiled at me." They sing that line, and it's over.
As tears typically roll down my face I love to contemplate that. How in the world would it feel if Jesus smiled at you? I don't care how cold hearted you may be; when a baby, any baby, smiles at you, you smile back. If that baby was Jesus, and you knew he would save the world, and he smiled at YOU, I think you could just float away...
The little drummer boy didn't have much to offer. No riches. Just service, a drum, and a willingness to play. But music was the drummer's gift from God. Reader, whatever your gift(s) may be - use them! Do your best to make Jesus (the grown-up version) smile. I think he does every time we play our figurative drum for Him. The next time you hear that line, "Then he smiled at me," pause and think about what you have done lately that would make Him smile at you. If you cannot think of anything, have no fear - you are still here! Go "play" your drum today. Make your Creator smile. And remember, He saved the world for you.
