Scripture of the Day: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Last night we attended our first Maundy Thursday service as a family - complete with the little guy. Besides one funeral, this was the first time he has had to sit through a church service (usually he is in Sunday school with all the kiddos). He made it through! But the one thing he kept saying to me is "I don't understand." I am sure that our pastor sounded like Charlie Brown's teacher to him and that pretty much every word coming out of his mouth made my poor little guy go, "huh???"
I love two things about that...1) he was actually trying to pay attention and more so, 2) I don't think that I really understand either. When I really think about it, I can never really truly grasp God's love for us. He loved the world so much that he GAVE his one and only Son to the world...and the world killed him. But that was still an act of love because only through Jesus' death are our sins forgiven. One of the reasons that I cannot wrap my mind around the Love God has for us is because I cannot fully understand God's grace. In a way, I view grace as getting something we do not deserve (salvation) simply because God loves us. That's a big love.
When you celebrate Easter this weekend, remember it isn't about eggs and baskets and presents. It's about Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead so that your sins could be forgiven. It is about an innocent lamb who died as a pleasing sacrifice to the Lord so that you can live. It is about the curtain tearing apart so that you can talk to God without an intermediary stepping in for you. It is about God wanting a personal relationship with YOU. Again my friends, that is a big love. Let's thank him for it.
Heavenly Father God, thank you for sending your Son to us. I cannot imagine the amounts of heartache, and joy, that caused you. Heartache because of how you knew it would end...and joy because it would bring the world a savior. On this Easter weekend, help us remember that it was all done out of love for us. Thank you for pouring grace out on the sinners of the world in portions so big we cannot comprehend them. We are forever grateful. We love you and in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
