Scripture of the Day: Genesis 9:13-16
13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
Back when I was in middle school, as an assignment, we had to write a haiku (Japanese poem with 17 syllables). I took some liberty because technically my last line is 6 syllables...but I have always remembered what I wrote:
Rainbows shine above
God's covenant to show us
All's well with the world.
Last night, after a surprise rain while we were at the park, I looked up to see a double rainbow. Rainbows always seem like miracles to me (regardless of their "scientific" explanation). Seeing them so high in the sky, knowing you could never reach it, but being able to see each color flow into one another is one of the most beautiful sights you could ever hope to see.
We shouldn't take rainbows for granted. Tonight, as I kept looking up at the sky, wanting to see how long I could see the rainbows, I felt like something inside of me was saying, "shame on you if you can see a rainbow and NOT be filled with awe at the One who made it." When you see a rainbow, I pray you remember how they came to be. Rainbows are not an accident.
Rainbows are a covenant between God and everything on this earth. Rainbows are hope because God is letting us know that no matter how bad things may be, he hasn't given up on us. Rainbows show us that we haven't been forgotten. Rainbows prove that sometimes after the storm, true beauty can make its way into our lives.
So the next time you see a rainbow, please send up a "thank-you" to the the One who put it in the sky!
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father God, thank you for rainbows! Thank you for putting such a beautiful sign in the sky to remind both You and us that all life will not be destroyed on this earth. Help us keep that feeling of hope and that reminder that the world will be okay all the time - and not only when rainbows are shining above. Never let us take rainbows for granted. Help us always see You and true awesomeness in their beauty. Amen.
