Scripture of the Day: Psalm 23: 1-6
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,[a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
Since I started reading the Bible, Psalm 23 has brought me more comfort than any other words I have read. The only Psalm I have attempted to memorize, I would recite it to myself before every medical procedure I had. The words made me feel safe, loved, and helped me focus on the fact that whatever the outcome of the procedure, I would be with Jesus when all is said and done!
This Psalm begins by stating that the Lord is our shepherd. This in and of itself implies He will take care of us. But more than take care of us, God would like to have us be comforted and our cups overflow!
What makes your heart overflow? When do you feel closest to God? Is it when you read? When you worship? When you spend time with fellow believers? When you talk to your children? When you pray? How does God fill your cup? If you don't know, I encourage you to take some time and find out!
This past weekend, I was having a conversation with my son about why we were going to church. My reason was that it fills my cup. I need that weekly time to focus, to spend time worshiping and to ponder on thoughts that the words of my pastor always bring up. On weeks that I miss church I won't say that my cup is empty, but it feels a little less "full." It is hard to feel my cup overflowing if I don't spend enough time with God for him to fill it. And friend, some weeks it takes more time than others! The world is a hard place...
I pray this morning that you have some thing in your life that makes you feel close to God. Some thing that makes your cup overflow, not with feelings of worldly happiness, but with feelings of being close to your Creator. I pray that God fills your cup like no other.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father God, thank you for being our ultimate comfort. Thank you for filling our cup not just so that we can survive, but so that we overflow. You don't speak to us all the same way. Help us each find the way that You may best fill our cup. Watch over us so that we can indeed, dwell in your house forever. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen.
