Thank God for Kids...Again! (Psalm 127:3)

Note this post was from last year...but slightly edited as my kiddo is another year older! 

 Scripture of the Day: Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward.

Song of the Day: Thank God for Kids by the Oakridge Boys (lyrics below in case you have never heard this gem!!)

The Scripture verse above, “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward,” seems another way to state “Thank God for kids!”

That song represents my child hood! My step-dad has been a long time fan of the Oakridge Boys. Growing up we made Christmas candy the day after Thanksgiving and listening to their first Christmas CD (from 1984 I think!) was tradition. The whole album is great, but that particular song has always held a special place in my heart. Now that I actually have one of my own, the song takes on a whole new meaning…

This song brings some much needed perspective tonight. My son is 3 and we are reaching a whole new level of sassiness and stubbornness. I am still at a loss most days on how to punish correctly, know when to threaten or when to just act. He says inappropriate things and is brutally honest even when it hurts people, and he still is not the best sharer and he HATES to go to bed (all typical behavior of 3 year olds...I know!) BUT this song makes me thankful for even those moments. Because really, for every moment that makes me frustrated, there are SEVERAL other moments that make my heart want to burst with joy. Every time he says "I love you", still wants to sit on my lap, sings the lyrics of "Amazing Grace" with me or prays before bed I realize how much I love that little man. Even though he no longer likes his name and would like to be called "Jack Nathan." :)

Children stretch us. They ask questions we would never think of and it is our job to attempt to come up with an answer that is true but not overwhelming. They make messes and we clean them up – attempting to teach lessons, but not ruin their self esteem or make them feel they must be perfect all the time.

Children get excited about EVERYTHING. And their excitement is pure and innocent and everything good. Children are also pure and innocent themselves. You can see that by looking in their eyes. Those eyes trust you. When you look in them, thank God that He trusts you to be such a strong influence in their lives.

Children are a gift from God. As the song says, “When you get down on your knees tonight and thank the Lord for His guiding light, pray they turn out right.” God will be a guiding light for you in regards to raising your children…ask him to show you the way. And pray! Pray that not only your children turn out right, but that YOU help show them what that “right” is. God can help guide you in that direction too!

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father God, thank you for kids! Help us be thankful for the good moments and the bad. Help us lock away the little treasures that our children say in our hearts and keep them there always. Help us guide our children to You. There is no better gift we can give our children than You! We love you and in your Son’s name we pray. Amen.

From the mouth's of babes

I'm writing this more for prosperity's sake and because I need to try and wrap my head around a conversation I just had with my seven year old. Mandisa's song "Bleed the Same" was playing in the car...my kiddo asks me what she is actually saying because he hears "We all be the same." I explained how it meant that regardless of skin color, or lots of other things really, we all bleed the same. On the inside, we are all the same. And then the zinger.
